BARNEGAT – The Freehold Township women’s soccer team has been one of the most consistent Shore Conference programs in the past 11 years.
They have won eight Shore Conference Class A North titles, including this year, during that time frame.
They won two NJSIAA Group IV state titles during that time.
And they had a Shore Conference tournament title heading into Thursday night’s SCT final against Toms River North.
But a team that were “so determined and so driven to have a fantastic year,” according to coach Dave Patterson, added their next accolade to an already impressive program history.
The Patriots’ No.1 seed beat No.2 seed Toms River North, 3-1, at Barnegat High School, to end a 10-year drought since their last TBS title.
“We graduated from 17 seniors, so these girls didn’t know they were supposed to be nervous, they didn’t know they should be a little patient because they got out at the first moment of summer. and were ready to go, ready to move on to new roles, “Patterson said.” And yes, we had a few major plays from last year that are still with us this year. But the way the first year s ‘is reinforced, the sophomores and juniors and even the seniors, who weren’t with us last year, the way they stepped up was extremely special.

This talented was shown on the field Thursday night.
Barely 47 seconds into the game, first-year forward Gaby Parker found herself in the right place in the
“He (the ball) deflected one of the defenders and I hit him with my left foot in the left corner. I knew I had to do it then. We had to get up early, ”Parker said. “The ball was right there after the deflection. This does not happen often especially since it is right in front of the goal where there are a bunch of defenders.
Toms River North (16-1-1) would equalize in the 27th minute with the foot of senior Faith Wavershak. On a free kick from around the 12-yard line, Wavershak hit a downhill shot just above the reach of Toms River North junior Kyran Thievon (14 saves) to tie the game.
“We knew Toms River North is a fantastic team, very talented, very well trained. We knew they were going to be the team to step up the 50-50 bullets and we knew if we were going to have a shot here we were going to have to be the aggressors, ”said Patterson. “And I think we surprised ourselves a bit with that first goal we got, but it gave us the confidence we needed to keep playing at the level that I know we are capable of.”

And that was to keep the pressure on Toms River North as the Patriots scored two unanswered goals to close the game.
“After losing 17 seniors last year, we felt like every returning player had to have a role for this year. And we didn’t have the Shore Conference tournament last year because of COVID-19, ”Freehold Township second-year forward Cassidy Corcione said. “So we felt like we had something to prove, especially with the other team having zero losses.”
Freehold Township junior midfielder / defender Gabby Koluch buried a free kick just outside the eight-yard line for a 2-1 lead in the 32nd minute. And Corcione had a 56th-minute penalty opportunity which she buried for a 3-1 lead.
“From the start of the match, we dominated. I had a feeling we were going to win just because of the way we were playing, ”said Koluch. “We connected our passes very well. We have a strong defense. And at the top, we just needed to score that goal and we did it.
And that effort saw the team clinch the second SCT title and the first SCT title since 2011.
Toms River North, who last won TBS in 2018 and was making his first appearance in the TBS final since 2019, turned up the pressure in the second half against Freehold Township freshman goalie Ashley Moore (eight saves ), but the defense defused all fire which Moore was unable to access.
